Our Story
Built in 1862 as a junction on the Midland Great Western Railway, The Station House retains a remarkable collection of original 19th-century railway buildings, recognised for their architectural and historical significance and protected by Meath County Council.
In 1981, Thelma and Chris Slattery purchased the property as a family home for their five young children. For daughters Denise and Suzanne, who are at the helm today, “growing up here was like a Famous Five adventure, exploring woods, rivers and fields, picking wild berries, finding frogs and discovering something new around every corner”.
That bustling family home soon began welcoming guests when Thelma opened a Bord Fáilte guest house. Her culinery flair and the couple’s natural love of hospitality led to the opening of Signal Restaurant and The Station House Hotel in 1984.
More than four decades later, three generations of the Slattery family continue that tradition. Thelma’s passion for food remains at its heart too; she still makes many of her own jams, chutneys, granola and biscuits, continuing the tradition of home cooking that began around the family table.
Today, The Station House is a member of Ireland’s Blue Book, features in the Michelin Guide hotel selection, and sits within 12 acres of gardens and woodland on the Boyne Valley Garden Trail.
Yet at its heart, it remains what it has been since 1981: a family home where guests are warmly welcomed.
