Puca Festival 2026 – What it is and Where to Stay

Like Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, Guinness, and Enya, all great things were born in Ireland-including Halloween.

On October 31st, over 2,500 years ago, dusk fell across the sacred hills of Meath. A Druid, adorned in a white tunic and a feathered headdress, lit a massive bonfire. Until the early hours of the morning, villagers danced around the flames, feasted, sang songs, and played games to celebrate the end of summer and welcome the new year.

It was on this night that the ancient Celts believed the veil separating our world from the spirit realm was paper-thin. At the end of the festivities, villagers returned home with a handful of flames to light their hearths. They left their windows and doors open to welcome the spirits of their ancestors inside and honored their loved ones by offering plates of food and sharing stories of the past year. It was a special time to remember the dead and feel their presence once again.

However, not all spirits were friendly, and not all were welcome.

As darkness settled in, the fairy mounds opened, spilling all kinds of mythological creatures into the world. Hoping to protect themselves from being whisked away to the underworld, people wore disguises, dressing up as animals and monsters. They carved frightening faces into turnips to ward off evil spirits, and farmers left out a small portion of their harvest as an offering—known as “the Púca’s share.” These ancient rituals, carried across the Atlantic by Irish immigrants, evolved into the Halloween we know today.

This Samhain, travel back in time to Ireland’s Ancient East with the Púca Festival, running from Thursday, October 29 to Sunday, November 1. As a modern reimagining of the ancient Celtic holiday, the Púca Festival works with local artists to showcase the best in contemporary Irish music, spectacle, and performance over four days in the historic towns of Athboy and Trim.

A massive 12th-century Anglo-Norman fort recognized as the largest castle of its kind in Ireland. It famously served as the center of the Lordship of Meath and a vital defensive stronghold, later gaining modern fame as a primary filming location for the film Braveheart.

• Newgrange, Distance from hotel: 25 km

A Magnificent Stone Age passage tomb built around 3200 BC—making it older than both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids! Renowned for its incredible engineering, most notably the winter solstice alignment, where the rising sun precisely illuminates the inner chamber on the shortest day of the year. The nearby interpretive centre provides information on the Tomb and tours can be arranged from there.
